Hearing Loss Prevention Guide

Hearing loss and impairment affects millions of individuals across the globe. The most common reason for hearing loss is a gradual loss as we grow older. This is known as presbycusis. About ⅓ of people in the U.S. between 65 and 75 are experiencing some level of presbycusis, and around 1 in 2 individuals over 75 are experiencing some degree of hearing impairment.

Hospitals now test newborns for hearing impairments, as it is recognized that early detection is the best strategy to hearing loss prevention. The most common reason for hearing loss is Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). Knowing the signs to look for, and being educated in how to prevent hearing loss will be your biggest guard in protecting your hearing.

Hearing Loss Prevention Guide – Early Detection is Key

What to look for when you think you may be experiencing hearing loss:

  • Muffled sound or distorted noises (speech, music, everyday ambient noise)
  • Frequently needing to ask someone to repeat themselves when speaking to you
  • The desire to withdraw from social conversation or public sound due to auditory confusion
  • Needing to turn the volume up when enjoying music or television
  • Trouble hearing consonant sounds
  • You find yourself raising your voice to be heard
  • You experience pain or ringing in your ears (tinnitus)

If you notice any of the above issues, we recommend booking an appointment with the hearing care professionals at Hearing Services of Delaware. Early detection can prevent further loss. Our team can assist you with hearing devices if the issue is severe enough. Managing any level of hearing loss early can help you maintain what hearing you have for the duration of your life.

How to Prevent Hearing Loss

Because exposure to loud noises is the #1 cause of hearing loss, it’s important to recognize risks for occupational hearing loss and even personal exposure to loud noises. Utilizing quality Personal Protective Equipment in the workplace and in venues that may be loud is a great start to helping your ears maintain optimal function for the rest of your life.

Here are some occupations and personal situations where you may be exposed to high levels of noise. Be sure to protect your hearing and take proactive measures in these environments:

  • Construction workers, factory workers, landscapers and manufacturers
  • Emergency Response workers (Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, etc)
  • Musicians and entertainers
  • Attending large venues for concerts or clubs
  • Military personnel
  • Setting off fireworks or explosives
  • Shooting a gun
  • Sporting events
  • Riding a motorcycle
  • Heavy equipment operation
